Periphyton
The characterization and monitoring of periphyton, the brown or green slimy accumulation found on submerged rocks along lakeshores, is a relatively recent approach to assessing lake eutrophication (degradation).
A periphyton protocol has been defined by the Réseau de Surveillance Volontaire des Lacs (RSVL) to help determine a lake’s health. Periphyton is an early indicator of changing phosphorus levels due to human activity in a lake. At Lac Gagnon, the APLG decided to participate in this five-year protocol and has been collecting data since 2022.
We are looking for volunteers interested in joining our team. You do not need any special knowledge, you just need to be comfortable in the water. It’s best to work in teams of two. You need a boat to get to the site, as well as scuba goggles or a mask and a GPS or smart phone. We will provide you with a ruler and a data sheet to fill in for your assigned site.
