A fire broke out on Island No. 7, south of Lac Gagnon, on Sunday, September 27, around 6:45 p.m. Thick white smoke was seen rising from the centre of the island on the eastern side, near the rocky headland where some people like to go jumping. There was a strong wind blowing from the east, and the smell of smoke spread quickly. Calls were made to 911. Firefighters from three municipalities responded. This area is not easily accessible, especially after dark. They made sure the fire was brought under control. Fortunately, the wind died down, it began to rain, and the worst was averted. No buildings were affected.
On Monday morning, the four firefighters from SOPFEU, based in Mont-Tremblant, went to the island and doused the affected area with plenty of water. They suspect that the fire may have been started by a cigarette butt. Beer cans were also found at the scene.
This is a good opportunity to remind everyone that caution and vigilance are essential at all times to prevent forest and brush fires. It should also be remembered that trespassing on private property is not allowed.
