Outstanding results

Hello,

Today, we are very pleased to  announce the results of yesterday’s referendum. Many of you came out to vote on August 24 and 31 or voted by mail. Your efforts have been rewarded.

Duhamel is the municipality with the highest voter turnout, with 70% of registered voters casting their ballots and 98.3% of them voting against the La Loutre mining project! At Lac Gagnon, the results exceeded all expectations! In fact, 80% of property owners on the electoral list exercised their right to vote! It should be remembered that this protest movement against the mining project began at Lac Gagnon.

Congratulations to everyone for this incredible mobilization! We are sending an unequivocal message to the governments!

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to this resounding victory! They put up posters, went door to door in July to register people on the electoral list, visited property owners over the last few days, worked in the polling station, made calls until 6:30 p.m. yesterday, and even drove voters to the municipal hall so they could cast their ballots.

We’d especially like to thank Ann Burns Tardif, Jackie Wells, Luc Robillard, Diane Reid, Robert Brosseau, Paul-André Laurin, Brigitte Mironchuck, Sylvain Anderson, Nathalie Tremblay, Laurent Bégué, Mark Conroy, Anthony Le Moine, François Hurteau and Yves Bourdage.  Thanks to Anne Wells for translating and publishing all the messages! Thanks to Hélène St-Hilaire for her major contribution to poster design. What dedication! What teamwork! Together, we are poised to achieve an unprecedented turnout in the upcoming municipal elections in November!

Here is an overview of the results in the four other municipalities:

  • Lac-Simon: 97.9% NO
  • St-Émile-de-Suffolk: 94% NO
  • Chénéville: 90% NO
  • Lac-des-Plages: 93% NO

The people have spoken. A mining project in the Petite-Nation region is simply not acceptable!

Today, there is extensive media coverage, in both English and French. You will soon be able to read and listen to various reports on the topic of the hour on the Regroupement de protection des lacs de la Petite-Nation website! In fact, Radio-Canada is currently at Lac Gagnon!

Have a great Labour Day everybody!
